2003 Infiniti G35
Body style(s): 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan
Trim Levels: base, Leather, Leather 6MT [sedan]; base, Leather, Leather 6MT [coupe]
MSRP range: $27,800-$32,200
Notes: More than the third-generation Q-ship, much more than the
stopgap 2003 M45, it was the new G35 sedan and Sport Coupe (actually a
two-door sedan itself by 1 cubic foot) that illustrated the revitalization
of Infiniti. The G35 replaced the lackluster front-drive G20 as the bottom
rung in Infiniti's product ladder. However, the new vehicle was moved
dramatically upmarket, aimed directly at the undisputed class benchmark,
the BMW 3-Series.
It was certainly sporty, leaving the pure luxury end of the market
to the I35. The Infiniti was derived from the 2-seater front-midships
(FM) platform of Nissan's 350Z. Thus, the G35 Sports Coupe is best thought
of as the new 2+2 model of the Z-car, just branded as an Infiniti. The
sedan is bigger still. Also using this platform was the new crossover
FX35 and barnstorming FX45. All base versions of these vehicles use a
version of Nissan's new 3.5L quadcam engine, increasing in power from
the G35 sedan to the G35 coupe to the Nissan 350Z. Note: the sedan only
gained the optional manual transmission partway through the model year.
Infiniti's G35 was Motor Trend's Car of the Year for 2003.
